Barbara Windsor health update: EastEnders star appears in high spirits in rare appearance

Barbara Windsor, 81, best known for her role as Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap EastEnders, posed for pictures alongside Paul Whitehouse as she met the cast of The Only Fools and Horses the musical. She seemingly appeared in high spirits as she beamed for the camera on the theatre stage. It comes after the EastEnders legend went public with her Alzheimer’s disease battle last year, but she had actually been diagnosed four years prior. She also posed for photos alongside musical cast members Tom Bennett and Ryan Hutton.

The star attended the West End show in London with her husband Scott Mitchell, 56.

Barbara looked stylish as she sported a patterned silk blouse and pale blue trousers.

The actress’ rare outing come after her spouse, who has been married to her for 18 years, revealed she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease last year.

The Carry On legend’s husband previously spoke with Express.co.uk and revealed the struggles Dame Barbara has faced since battling the disease.

Scott said: “I can’t leave Barbara by herself anymore.

“Life has changed drastically for her and of course that reflects on our whole life together. It’s really been overwhelming.

“[At the time] Barbara wasn’t really talking about it or accepting it which is a common thing for people living with Alzheimer’s.”

He continued: “Friends have been just incredible. Lots of people visit the house, they come round. She feels she’s not forgotten.

“She does spend a lot of time at home. You can feel quite alone, I guess.”

Scott is currently preparing to join Dame Barbara’s former EastEnders co-stars for the London Marathon in support of their dementia campaign.

Stars including Jake Wood, Adam Woodyatt and Natalie Cassidy are among those taking part to raise money for their campaign, the Dementia Revolution.

They hope to raise £100,000 to help fund the ground-breaking research into dementia, as well as to raise awareness of the condition.

Ahead of the London Marathon which kicks off this month, Scott has revealed Dame Barbara played an instrumental part in the campaign and has enjoyed taking part.

He said: “She realises she doesn’t work anymore. She loves doing things.

“That’s why she enjoys doing things like the video for the Dementia Revolution which she did.

“She enjoyed that because it was a bit of her old life. We get the make-up artist in, we get the cameras out and she gets involved.

“She even starts changing the key words around. ‘Ooh it will be better if I say this’,” Scott added.
