Russell Wilson gives Seahawks less than TWO weeks to agree a new deal

The 30-year-old quarterback has informed the organisation he wants a new deal sorted out before the first day of the team’s offseason workout program, reports The Seattle Times.

It is understood the two parties are already in talks about extending the Super Bowl champion’s contract, but nothing has yet been agreed.

Wilson is entering the final year of his four-year, $87.6million deal he signed in 2015.

As it currently stands he is expected to earn a base salary of $17m for the 2019 season.

Speaking at the NFL league meetings in Phoenix, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll revealed talks have begun with Wilson.

“We’ve been in communication, sure,” Carroll said.

“It’s very topical, we’re on it.”

According to OverTheCap, Wilson currently ranks 12th on the highest earning quarterbacks list, with an average annual salary of $21.9m.

Green Bay Packers franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers comfortably holds top spot earning $33.5m, ahead of Atlanta Flacons’ Matt Ryan on $30m and Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins on $28m.

Another notable comparison is New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is a six-time Super Bowl winner and currently ranks 17th.

He averages $20.5m a season – but he is also expected to negotiate a new deal before next season starts.

Last month Wilson made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night talk show, and was asked if he expected to become the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback with his next deal.

“There’s a great potential in that,” Wilson said.

“We’ll see what happens.

“It’s not like it’s gonna make me feel bad.”

This season will be Wilson’s 8th year in the league after being picked up in round three of the 2012 draft.

He has spent his entire career in Seattle and doesn’t expect that to change any time soon.

Last season, Wilson threw for a career-high 35 touchdowns, completing 280 of 427 pass attempts for 3,448 yards with seven interceptions.

It is expected a deal will be reached between both parties, however, Wilson did reveal back in January that he would be willing to see out his contract and test the free agency market if necessary.

“Oh, yeah, if that’s what I’ve got to do,” Wilson said the day after the 2018/19 season ended.

“It’s business and everything else and I know essentially after this season I could potentially be a free agent, that kind of thing.

“I don’t think that way — I see myself being in Seattle.

“I love Seattle, special place for me.

“I also understand it’s a business world and everything else.”
