Lewis Hamilton: Carol Vorderman praises F1 star for helping mum ahead of Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton, 34, has been applauded by Carol Vorderman, 58, who showed her support for the Formula One champion in a series of personal tweets. The Countdown favourite is currently attending the Bahrain Grand Prix, where Lewis will be racing again as part of the Mercedes-AMG team later this afternoon. The star praised the British contender in a message to her 396,000 followers this morning. She wrote: “Time to get my hat on and get off to the circuit here #BahrainGP…. I remain a @LewisHamilton girl… @MercedesAMGF1 Go Lewis Go.”

Carol then recalled a heartwarming experience where she met Lewis, revealing how he had generously offered to reach out to her late mum, Jean, when she was going through “life saving surgery”.

Revealing the story in honour of Mother’s Day, the presenter took the opportunity to reminisce about her mum, who tragically passed away after a long battle with cancer in 2017.

She tweeted: “Little story about @LewisHamilton and my Mum for #MotheringSunday #HappyMothersDay.

“My Mum, in her 80s, was a Lewis fan and she would sit on the sofa watching @f1 shouting ‘Go Lewis Go’ waving a flag and grinning. Mum loved him. The day before she had to have life saving surgery..1/3.

“2/3… The day before Mum’s op I saw @LewisHamilton @MercedesAMGF1 and told him about my Mum. He insisted on doing a little video for her wishing her well for her life saving op and he signed my Paddock Pass “Jean, wishing you all the best tomorrow. God Bless. Lewis x”…

“3/3…Mum wore that Paddock pass signed by @LewisHamilton @MercedesAMGF1 over her hospital gown as she was wheeled off to the Operating Theatre. We waited anxiously for hours. Eventually she was wheeled back into her room still sleeping, and the Paddock pass was laid on her chest.”

The TV personality concluded: “So on #MotheringSunday God Bless YOU @LewisHamilton @MercedesAMGF1 @f1 for making my Mum so very happy when she was nervous about her operation.

“Mum did well after that op and lived for years after. I know she’ll be looking down now and still shouting today ‘GO LEWIS GO.’”

Carol’s moving declaration to Lewis caught the attention of plenty of her fans, who headed to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One wrote: “Thank you for telling us this. So glad Lewis did this for your mum.”

Another added: “What a lovely story, thank you for sharing. Your mum was one lucky lady, bless.”

A Twitter user then commented: “Nice touch. Great to see the human side to our sporting heroes.”

Lewis is set to take on another challenge against rivals Ferrari today, after placing third in the qualifying rounds.

The five-time Formula One World Champion tweeted about his experience at this year’s Grand Prix to his 5.45 million followers yesterday.

Lewis shared a photo of himself smiling at the event with the caption: “Decent day in the office. Great work over night from the team and am happy with the progress we made.

“However, we have work to do so we will keep our heads down. Congrats to Charles on his first pole. Tomorrow could be fun for us all. Let’s go!!!”

The sports star also shared his own Mother’s Day message dedicated to the important women in his life, including his mum Carmen Larbalestier, on the social media platform this morning.

He wrote: “Happy Mother’s Day to the women who have provided me with unconditional love, warmth and guidance my entire life. To all the mums out there doing their best raising your children, today is for you.”
