The 2019 NAACP Image Awards have arrived and it’s a big night. The show is celebrating its 50th year and the show was held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood for the first time in its history.

Anthony Anderson hosted the event and there were already some big name winners revealed before the show. Netflix and HBO had the highest number of nominations with 22 and 20, respectively. ABC followed closely behind with 18. Oscars Best Picture nominee Black Panther has 14 nominations, including Best Motion Picture. BlacKkKlansmen, Crazy Rich Asians, If Beale Street Could Talk and The Hate U Give are also up for awards in the Best Motion Picture category.

Donald Glover‘s hit show Atlanta is up for Outstanding Comedy Series alongside black-ish, Dear White People, grown-ish and Insecure.

Jay-Z received the coveted and prestigious President’s Award, which centers around dedication to public service.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson praised the rapper in a statement and why he was chosen for the award.

“Shawn Carter has been committed to shedding light on the issues that plague the black community including systematic racism and unjust treatment under the law, utilizing his global platform to create everlasting change. There is no better time than now, as we celebrate our 50th year, to honor him with this award,” he said in a statement.

Empire star Jussie Smollett, who has been at the center of an investigation surrounding an alleged attack on Jan. 29, was nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. However, he lost and did not attend the awards dinner on Friday night. On Tuesday, Chicago prosecutors announced that all charges against him had been dropped.

The show is focused on celebrating “the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film, and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.”
