Huawei P30 Pro just outclassed the Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro – here's why

Huawei P30 Pro is the Chinese tech giant’s newest flagship smartphone that boasts myriad improvements over its predecessor.

One of the P30 Pro’s best features comes in the form of its new camera array.

The Huawei handset comes with a whopping four modules on its rear that are comprised of a main, time-of-flight, wide-angle and telephoto sensor.

The latter harnesses a periscope-style system that allows it to deliver a 5-times optical zoom for Android fans.

This means the P30 Pro can get closer to far away objects without noticeably compromising photo quality.

Moreover, Huawei has also been eager to discuss numerous other technologies it claims allows the P30 Pro to produce quality snaps.

All told, the P30 Pro has a better camera system than that offered by both the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro, according to DxOMark.

DxOMark is an outlet renowned for meticulously analysing smartphone cameras and awarding them a numbered score based on performance.

Following the reveal of the P30 Pro at Huawei’s scheduled hardware event on March 26, the outlet issued its verdict on the P30 Pro.

While the publication stated the new Huawei flagship still had areas to improve upon in terms of “colour and artefacts”, it praised the device for its zooming capabilities and ability to perform in difficult conditions.

DxOMark said: “If you still needed a reason to spend money on a compact camera, it would have been for zoom reach, as even the best smartphone cameras could not provide usable zoom image quality beyond a 5-times factor.

“This has now changed with the Huawei P30 Pro and its innovative zoom system that uses folded optics and a super-resolution algorithm, which finally makes usable 10-times zoom on smartphones a reality.

“The zoom on its own will make the new Huawei an extremely tempting option for many mobile photographers, but the camera performs very well in almost all other areas as well.

“The bokeh mode is the best we have seen; image detail and noise levels are excellent across all light levels; and the camera records high-quality footage in video mode.

“There is still some room for improvement in terms of colour and artefacts, but these are relatively minor shortcomings that most users will be able to easily live with.”

The Huawei P30 Pro was awarded a final tally of 112, a figure that surpasses the 109 scores given to both the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro.

It is worth noting the number given to the P30 Pro placed it top of DxOMark’s entire smartphone rear camera rankings.

DxOMark also reviewed the P30 Pro’s front camera and stated the 32-megapixel sensor in question “offers significant improvements” over its predecessor.

The score of 89 given to the P30 Pro’s selfie sensor is higher than the 75 and 72 of the Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro respectively.
