eBay: Peter Rabbit 50p selling for £5,000 weeks after new coin released – but watch out

If searching for a rare find, heading to eBay can be a good starting point with lots of unique products on offer.

Earlier this month, a new Peter Rabbit 2019 commemorative coin was released that featured a drawing of the well-known Beatrix Potter character.

The first Beatrix Potter commemorative coin was released in 2016 and there have been new ones released each year since then.

A Peter Rabbit 50p coin from 2016 was recently selling for £5,000, but why does it cost so much and is it worth it?

The seller, “megsmum13-2008” listed the “overly rare” coin at a highly marked up rate as it went on sale for £5,000.

The Peter Rabbit 50p coin was released in 2016 and has been described as “overly rare” by the seller.

“megsmum13-2008” goes onto explain the coin is a circulated version of the Peter Rabbit Half Whisker coin released in 2016.

For those willing to splash the cash on this coin, they will also face a delivery change of £1.40 for standard delivery, which will send the coin by Royal Mail 1st class large letter.

Many coins on eBay come with a huge selling price, but checking with a coin expert is always recommended before making a purchase.

The Peter Rabbit coin on offer is described as rare, but it may not be worth as much as the asking price.

It was originally released by the Royal Mint in 2016 as part of a collection to honour Beatrix Potter on the 150th anniversary of her birth.

The 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p coin rates one on the Scarcity Index, making it “common”.

The publication Spend it? Save it? What should you do?, written by Phil Mussell and the production team of Coin News Magazine, have said the coin has a value of £4.

They have also given the coin a mintage of 9,600,000 which means it is not a rare find and buyers should be careful when trying to purchase the coin.

Another 2016 Peter Rabbit coin has been selling for nearly £4,000, but this may also not be worth it.

Although this coin has also been described as “rare” it still only holds the value of £4.

This week, another “rare” 50p coin sold for much more than face value as it went for £140, but was this a bargain?

The Kew Gardens 50p coin sold for £141.99 on eBay, and according the Change Checker, the coin has a mintage of 210,000.

The 50 pence piece rates 100 on the scarcity index which means it is classed as ‘very rare’, and has been valued at around £100, meaning the buyer was not far off the mark.
