Alexander Armstrong: Pointless host on how long he and Richard Osman can keep doing show

The presenter, 49, did a Q&A with Pointless fans via The Guardian back in 2017, answering all of their queries about the long-running game show. At one point, a fan asked: “How many times can presenters do a formulaic show and avoid burnout?” Alexander Armstrong responded candidly, saying: “The answer is – for as long as they love doing it. And people don’t mind watching.

“I get tired but never bored doing Pointless and we do four shows a day,” he added.

“That says a lot about the quality of the contestants we put together, the peculiar chemistry of eight random people being brought together, the imaginative questions that our brilliant team comes up with and the depth of my friendship with Richard [Osman].”

Praising his relationship with Pointless co-host Richard, 48, he added: “Having someone you’ve know and love to work with is brilliant.”

Last week, Alexander joked about “ruining” the series with Richard when a bloopers episode aired.

The presenters were seen looking back over the 19 series of Pointless which have aired since it first hit screens in 2009, recapping the funniest, strangest and most memorable moments the show has seen over the years.

Taking to Twitter, Alexander told his 407,000 followers: “Hope you enjoyed watching #PointlessBloopers as much as Richard I enjoyed RUINING the show.”

Fans flooded the comments section with remarks about how entertaining the one-off special had been, with one saying: “Very much enjoyed it. Especially the bloopers.

“Here’s to many more years of #Pointless answers.”

“The bloopers show was very funny,” another tweeted. “Tears rolling down cheeks.”

A third added: “Really enjoyed the prog but you forgot my all time favourite when, looking for a famous William, someone said William Tell wrote Hamlet.”(sic)

In the bloopers episode, Alexander and Richard were seen handling a number of unusual situations, including take after take of fluffed lines, contestants giving hysterical answers and even the moment one hopeful told the former she was going to “give him three children”.

Miraculously managing to keep a straight face during the latter incident, Richard responded in a deadpan manner: “Is that each?”

Meanwhile, Richard recently assured fans there would be plenty of episodes of Pointless to come when the bloopers programme caused some to question whether they would be making any more.

“Please make more episodes. For the sake of my sanity!”(sic) one tweeted.

“We’re about to record another 220 episodes, so don’t panic!” Richard told his 772,000 followers.

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
