Barcelona team news: Predicted line up – Suarez to start, Messi huge doubt

Barcelona could open up a 15-point advantage over Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, and their 4-0 win against Espanyol earlier in the season suggests they will do just that.

Lionel Messi is likely to miss out on the clash after suffering an injury during Argentina’s clash with Venezuela last week.

The 31-year-old will be a big miss to the Ernesto Valverde’s side after scoring 29 of their 73 La Liga goals so far this season.

Despite Messi’s absence, Barca should have enough to beat their local rivals, who sit 13th in the table after 28 games.

Valverde has been open about the injury to his star player, and hopes to have him back for their Champions League quarter-final clash with Manchester United.

The forward returned to training alongside striker partner Luis Suarez on Thursday, with the Uruguayan having trained alone on Wednesday.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu discussed the idea of replacing Messi earlier this month – before reassuring supporters that it won’t be happening anytime soon.

“We have the best player in the world, in the history of football,” Bartomeu told BBC Sport.

“I know that one day Leo will say ‘I stop playing football’.

“I hope that it’s going to be in a far few years but we have to prepare the club for the future.

“And that is why we are bringing young talent to Barcelona – Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Frenkie de Jong.

“We have to continue this period of success and excellency.”

Messi contract runs until 2021 at the Nou Camp, but talks are reportedly underway to extend that deal.
