Guatemala crash HORROR as least 30 dead after truck smashes into crowd

The country’s president confirmed that a further four people were injured following the incident on Wednesday night. According to local reports, the truck struck the group after they had gone onto the road to help another person injured in a separate car crash. A local spokesman for the fire department said the car was a Cecilio Chacaj.

 

Reports suggest women and children were among the victims.

At the time, a fatal car crash had just occurred moments before the truck smashed into the group.

Shocking footage has been shared widely across social media, depicting the horrible scene where the victims lay.

Guatemalan president said in a statement on Twitter: “With much sadness I regret the tragedy that occured in the municipality of Nahuala, Solola, which has left more than 30 dead due to a traffic accident.

“We are currently coordinating actions to provide all the support to the victims’ families. My condolences.”

According to the Daily Star, at least 125 people have died in road accidents in the country in 2019.

The incident happened on the Intermarican highway, Guatemalan media said.

On Twitter, the Guatemalan government said it “deeply lamented” the tragedy.

The statement said: “The President of the Republic is working to coordinate actions to bring all necessary support to the families of the victims, as well as medical assistance to those who have been transferred to hospitals in the western region.

“We are attending this national tragedy with the support of all the government institutions to help the families of the victims immediately.

“From tomorrow we will declare national mourning for three days in memory of those who died.

“Our deepest condolences and solidarity.”
