Galaxy Fold vs Huawei Mate X – One of these foldable phones could have a major advantage

Although the Galaxy Fold and Mate X are both folding phones, they both take a very different approach when it comes to design.

The Samsung offering folds on top of itself, essentially doubling the product’s thickness.

Galaxy Fold comes with two displays; a main panel and a cover screen.

The former is 7.3-inches in size and offers a resolution of 1536×2152 and a density of 414-pixels-per-inch while the latter is 4.6-inches and offers a 1080p resolution.

Galaxy Fold is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and has five cameras in total.

Meanwhile, the Huawei Mate X comes with a single 8-inch display that folds round the back of the device to present users with a 6.6-inch front panel and a 6.38-inch rear screen.

Huawei’s own Kirin 980 processor is housed inside the Mate X, the same unit found in the firm’s Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro flagships.

Mate X comes with three cameras in total; a main, wide-angle and a telephoto.

While both folding devices are incredibly futuristic and offer a score of features, it appears Samsung’s offering may outclass the Huawei in terms of pure display durability.

Samsung recently posted video showcasing the folding tests that have been used to stress the main display of the Galaxy Fold.

One of the biggest concerns with foldable devices surrounds screen longevity.

Essentially, a display can only be folded a certain amount of times before its screen degrades and the crease in the middle potentially becomes more noticeable.

The clip showed the forthcoming flagship being folded by machines in a lab; Samsung stated its test is designed to see if the hardware is capable of delivering over 200,000 folds which it claims equates to around five years of usage if the phone is harnessed 100 times a day.

Discussing its methodology, the South Korean OEM said: “Part smartphone, part tablet, Samsung’s category-defying Galaxy Fold offers users an entirely new kind of mobile experience, featuring fun and innovative ways to multitask, watch videos, play games, and more.

“Samsung subjected the device to several rounds of extensive tests in its state-of-the-art reliability labs to make sure that the Galaxy Fold is ready to come to market.

“Naturally, given the smartphone’s design, a folding test was a pivotal part of the Galaxy Fold’s durability assessment.

“This test, which examines whether the Galaxy Fold can outlast 200,000 folds and unfolds (or around five years of use, if used 100 times a day), takes a full week to complete.

“While the extent of the test may seem like overkill to some, Samsung viewed it as vital to ensuring the durability of device’s hinged design and Infinity Flex Display.”

The 200,000 figure quoted by Samsung is double what Huawei has claimed the Mate X is capable of.

In a recent briefing with the CEO of Huawei Technologies Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu, Express.co.uk was told the Mate X has been designed to withstand 100,000 folds.

This means the forthcoming flagship would be able to last over two and a half years of usage if it is folded 100 times a day.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold that has a confirmed release date of April 26, Huawei has only stated it plans start selling the Mate X in the middle of 2019.
