Rangers boss Steven Gerrard LET DOWN by ONE player but boss got transfer decision wrong

That’s according to Celtic legend John Hartson, who says Rangers could be 10 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership had they played the entire season in the fashion they beat the Bhoys back in December.

The Light Blues take on Celtic for a third time this season in the Old Firm at Parkhead this Sunday (12pm).

The last time they met, Rangers earned a first win in nearly three years against their arch enemies at Ibrox when Ryan Jack’s first-half strike was enough to end a 12-game winless run against the Hoops.

Victory drew Gerrard’s charges level on points with the defending Premiership champions going into the winter break, albeit with Celtic boasting a game in hand.

Just nine games on, Celtic are 10 points clear of the Gers and are on the cusp of winning an eighth straight title.

Rangers travel to their rivals knowing anything but victory will surely end the title race.

But player-turned-pundit Hartson thinks Morelos – despite scoring 29 goals across all competitions – has let his manager down having missed several matches after amassing four red cards and 15 yellow cards this season.

The former Celtic front-man also thinks Gerrard will regret having signed Jermain Defoe in the January transfer market.

The Liverpudlian coach recruited his former England team-mate on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth but has been stuck between starting Morelos or Defoe as his lone striker in a 4-3-3 formation.

Hartson said: “If Rangers played like they did that day against Celtic they could have been the ones 10 points clear.

“But they have dropped points all over the place. Alfredo Morelos has let his manager down by failing to stay on the pitch at times.

“The brought in a big signing in Jermain Defoe, but it just confused the situation. It left Gerrard wondering who to play.

“[January signing Steven] Davis hasn’t kicked a ball.”

And Hartson believes Rangers allowed themselves to stagnate after their win over Celtic just after Christmas.

He added on the Gers: “Rangers got a lot of praise for that last win against Celtic.

“But it was about time Rangers stepped up and performed at a level and actually beat Celtic.

“But is that enough? Just turn up and beat Celtic in one Old Firm game? Does that make you happy?

“If it does, then you have a problem, because Rangers should have been looking to kick on from there.

“They haven’t, while Celtic have, and that’s why they are 10 points clear.”
