New York EMERGENCY measles outbreak: ALL unvaccinated children BANNED from public spaces

The youngsters who haven’t had their jabs must stay away from places with other people following reports of 153 cases of the virus. The ban has been put in place in Rockland County, on the Hudson River, north of New York City. According to the BBC, anyone caught opposing the order could be sent to prison for up to six months and face a $500 (£378) fine.

In a statement, Rockland County Executive Ed Day said the community would “not sit idly by while children in our community are at risk”.

Reports from the New York Times suggest that the virus has broken out mainly in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

Mr Day added: “This is a public health crisis and it is time to sound the alarm.”

Mr Day also revealed some parents had been “resistant” towards the banning.

He said: “They’ve been told ‘we’re not discussing this, do not come back,’ when visiting the homes of infected individuals as part of their investigations.”

The order will last approximately 30 days, official sources suggest.

The order bans unvaccinated children from locations including schools, shopping centres, restaurants and places of worship.

Measles can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening conditions in some people.

The condition can last around seven to 10 days, but once the body has treated it, it is highly unlikely to return.

The UK eliminated measles in 2016, the World Health Organisation said.

Measles can be treated by drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration, closing curtains to help reduce light sensitivity and using damp cotton wool to clean the eyes.

The disease can be caught by breathing in droplets of infection given out by sneezing or coughing, as well as using a surface contaminated by the virus.
