China earthquake: Magnitude 5 earthquake STRIKES near Mangya City in northwest China

The magnitude 5 quake was detected at 5.36am local time (9.36pm GMT) in the northwest of China, Qinghai Province. Strong tremors were felt in adjoining areas. The earthquake struck at a dept of 9km, according to CENC.

The United States Geological Survey reported a lower magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale and at a depth of 10km.

The epicentre of the quake was in the Kunlun mountains area.

It was also right next to the border with the Xinjiang region.

There are no reports so far of any damage or injuries.

Magnitude 5 earthquakes are considered moderate.

They can cause damage of varying severity to poorly constructed buildings.

At most, there will be none to slight damage to other buildings, but it will be felt by everyone.

Magnitude 4.5 earthquakes are considered to be light.

They involve noticeable shaking of indoor objects and rattling noises.

They are felt by most in the affected area and slightly felt outside.

Generally they cause none to minimal damage, but objected may fall off shelves or be knocked over.
