It transpired that Natasha (played by Mali Harries) has a lot of debt that she’d kept quiet from Tom (William Troughton).
He found out the truth on The Archers when Natasha asked him to go hunting for a letter for HMRC.
Tom went through his wife’s belongings but couldn’t believe the contents of one of the letters on the BBC radio soap.
On finding it, he exclaimed to her down the phone: “What the hell…”
“What’s the matter?” Natasha asked as he informed her: “Your credit card bill.”
“I’d forgotten that was there,” she replied.
“You owe nearly £8,000,” a flabbergasted Tom said.
He continued: “That’s a bit of a shock.”
“It’s been worse,” she explained however Tom was still reeling.
She assured him it had been a busy time for her with buying things for the wedding, and that things would be better when they moved because she’d have more space to get organised.
It was still on Tom’s mind later on when he and Natasha were together again.
He began: Your credit card bill…I’ve been worrying all afternoon.”
Natasha retorted: “My credit limit is a lot more than that.”
He then brought into the house the pair were meant to be renting into the equation as he said: “We didn’t factor in that you were carrying this debt.”
Natasha once again provided excuses, this time saying it was important for her to present a certain image and that she like to have “nice things”.
Tom explained: “Of course I trust you and if that’s the way you run your life then fine, absolutely fine.
“I just didn’t know, that’s all.”
Those watching at home were quick to speculate on the future of the couple’s relationship following the big revelation.
“First rift in the quickie marriage. It’ll end in tears…#thearchers,” one wrote on Twitter.
Another opined: “Not discussing your finances honestly before getting married always leads to trouble. #thearchers.”
“Oh dear, Tom. What’s the saying, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure”? #thearchers,” a third shared.
“So is Natasha going to end up in Debtor’s Jail?! #TheArchers,” a fourth exclaimed.
While a fifth declared: “It’s your debt now too Tom! That’s an awful lot of veg boxes you need to sell. #thearchers.”
Can their marriage survive this bump in the road?
