Michael Schumacher latest: Son Mick to make F1 debut and race for Ferrari in Bahrain

The 20-year-old will make his F1 debut at the Young Driver Test in Bahrain and will also be kitted out in the famous red colours of Ferrari, according to Auto Bild. Mick, 20, will race for Ferrari on the first day of the test event and the next day for Ferrari’s partner team Alfa Romeo at the Bahrain International Circuit in April. The event will take place days after current stars including Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen battle it out at the second Grand Prix of the season.

The son of the seven-time Formula One world champion, is already part of the Ferrari fold and joined its driver academy ahead of his first season competing in the Formula Two championships.

Mick won the European F3 title last year with the Prema team as he looks to take the next step on the clear path to the premier class in motorsport.

Michael Schumacher won five of his seven world titles with the Italian team and Mick stated it is an “honour” to be compared to his father.

He said: “Being compared to my father was never a problem for me.

“It’s pretty simple. For me, being compared to the best driver in F1 history is the goal you want to achieve.

“I feel honoured to be compared to him because I can learn and try to improve.”

Little is publicly known about Michael Schumacher current state of health after he suffered serious head injuries during a tragic skiing incident in the french Alps on December 29 2013.

The racing legend crashed and hit his head on a rock and was placed in a medically induced coma for six months after the accident.

Shortly after he was transferred for further rehabilitation at the University of Lausanne before being moved to his home in Switzerland.

The Schumacher family continue to keep his health a private matter.

The Young Driver Test takes place on 2-3 April in Bahrain.
