Liverpool news: Why Jurgen Klopp is not happy with Xherdan Shaqiri – Raphael Honigstein

That is the opinion of German football expert Raphael Honigstein.

Shaqiri joined Liverpool from relegated Stoke for a fee of around £13.5million.

The Switzerland international was initially a regular under Jurgen Klopp, whether that was as a substitute or starting the match.

However, Shaqiri has started just two Premier League games in 2019 – the last of which came on January 31.

In fact he has only appeared in two of Liverpool’s last nine matches in all competitions.

Honigstein and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright were discussing the lack of creativity from the Reds midfield this season.

And Wright says he expected more from Shaqiri in that regard.

“I thought someone like Shaqiri might have come in to do that,” Wright said on Premier League Today.

But Honigstein believes Klopp is not happy with the 27-year-old’s output, having scored six goals and assisted two in the Premier League this season.

And he believes Naby Keita, who has struggled since joining from RB Leipzig last summer, has suffered similarly to Shaqiri.

“I think Klopp is, it’s just my personal view, I think he’s not happy with the end product from him,” Honigstein replied.

“I think Shaqiri does a lot of good things but is not quite decisive enough in these moments.

“And when you have that extra attacking midfielder on the pitch, and you sacrifice one of the holding midfielders, I think that guy really needs to deliver every time.

“Otherwise the risk/reward scenario is not quite right and I think that’s how he looks at it at the moment.

“And of course somebody like Naby Keita, who was also bought to do a similar job in a different way, but in a similar net effect by supporting the attack, going into the box yourself, scoring, taking on players – he hasn’t quite done it.

“So I think that has also had an affect on how Jurgen Klopp has set up his midfield.”
