Supernatural ending season 15: Why is Supernatural ending?

Season 15 of Supernatural is going to be the final series ever of the hit drama which has been on screens since 2005. Supernatural season 15 was confirmed earlier this year by The CW after getting the green light back in February. The series was renewed along with a slew of other shows on the channel.

Why is Supernatural ending?

No reason has been given for why Supernatural is ending but it could be a number of factors.

After airing for a decade-and-a-half on The CW, it looks like Supernatural may have run its course with the cast and crew likely to want to move on to new projects.

Also, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke always saw the show only running for five seasons which suggests the universe has gone as far as it can with the series lasting triple this number.

Actor Jared Padalecki, who plays Sam Winchester, shared a video message with his 3 million Twitter followers about the show coming to an end.

He captioned the tweet: “Hey #SPNFamily here’s a little message from @JensenAckles @mishacollins and me. I’m so grateful for the family that’s been built because of the show. Excuse me while i go cry.”

The video featured Padalecki along with co-stars Dean Winchester actor Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel.

In the video, Padalecki explained: “We wanted you to hear from us that although we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale.”

Ackles continued: “Though we’re very, very excited to be moving into out 15th season… it will be our last – 15 years of a show that has changed my life and I’m sure has changed these guys’ lives.

“We wanted you to hear it from us that though we’re excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big, grand finale of an institution.”

Padalecki continued: “We’ve cried some tears and we’ll cry some more. We’re grateful and we will work all the emotion into next season.”

All three men appeared emotional in the video and appeared to be fighting back tears as they recorded the message.

Season 15 of Supernatural will consist of 20 episodes like the current run and is expected to be premiering in October 2019.

Supernatural has remained a firm favourite at The CW with strong ratings during its time.

Unfortunately, the series has not managed to spawn spin-off series with Wayward Sisters not hitting the right note with audiences.

Other attempts at spin-offs include Ghostfacers and Supernatural: Bloodlines didn’t become shows in their own right either.

Supernatural first started in 2005 and had aired over 300 episodes so far during its run.

The series even did an animated Scooby-Doo crossover which saw the Winchester brothers become cartoons for one week only.

Season 14 of Supernatural is yet to air in the UK with no premiere date yet confirmed but will be broadcast on E4 when it does return.

The final season of Supernatural is expected to be wrapping up in 2020 with filming expected to be taking place soon.

Supernatural season 14 airs on The CW in the US on Thursdays
