Roger Federer makes ‘sad’ retirement admission as he issues Next Gen advice at Miami Open

The Swiss icon was in conversation with Next Gen star Miomir Kecmanovic in a light-hearted interview for the tour’s official website.

Federer is in his 21st season on the professional tennis circuit having enjoyed an iconic career, winning 20 Grand Slams and 100 singles titles.

But now 37, Federer is steadily nearing the end of his lengthy career having carefully managed his schedule in recent seasons to ensure he can stay at his physical peak.

Remarkably, the world No 5 is still one of the best players on tour and has reached the finals in Dubai and Indian Wells in the last two tournaments.

Having declared he feels fully fit despite taking part in a third successive tournament, Federer will also be hoping to get to another championship match at the Miami Open – with his opening match pitting him against Radu Albot.

Chatting with Kecmanovic at the Hard Rock Stadium – the Miami Open’s new venue as of this year – Federer admitted he is sad that he will soon have to hang up his racket.

The 19-year-old joked: “You’ve been on the tour longer than I’ve been alive almost so do you have any tips that I can use out here?”

And in response, Federer said: “Enjoy yourself. And you have enough time.

“I think when you’re young you always think it has to happen tomorrow.

“Just have a blast out there.

“I wish I was your age and could do it all over again.

“I’m a little bit sad I’m at the back end of my career but I’m sure you’ll have a great career.”

Kecmanovic is currently at a career-high ranking of world No 95 having reached the quarter finals in Indian Wells earlier this month.

The teenager was defeated by Marcos Giron in qualifying but was the lucky loser after Kevin Anderson withdraw with an elbow injury.

Kecmanovic was eventually defeated by Canada’s Milos Raonic in the last eight.

With Federer granted a first-round bye in Miami, Kecmanovic will hope to join him in the second round.

He faces Ernests Gulbis in order to join the 20-time Grand Slam champion in the next phase.

Federer, meanwhile, will take on Radu Albot in his opening match.
