Novak Djokovic: Why new Miami Open venue suits me over Roger Federer

World No 1 Djokovic is the pre-tournament favourite having won the last three Grand Slam titles.

The Serbian slipped to a surprise early exit at Indian Wells last week but he is desperate to bounce back at the first time of asking.

The Miami Open has moved from the iconic Crandon Park to the home of NFL side Miami Dolphins.

And Djokovic thinks the change in location has made the circumstances much more look like an indoor court – on which he has always blossomed.

The 15-time Grand Slam winner has only lost once to Federer on indoor courts since 2010.

So he is feeling extremely confident ahead of his opening match this weekend.

“I don’t expect the conditions to be replicated,” Djokovic said.

“We can see there is very little wind and no sun in the middle of the day.

“It is very different. I personally like things to be this way.

“It is an indoor-like facility and that suits my game.

“Hopefully I can start off the tournament well, get myself going and see how far I get.”

Djokovic also praised the tournament organisers for moving venue.

“I thought it was a bold move [to relocate]…to a football stadium and create something quite different that we haven’t seen before,” added Djokovic.

“It’s a courageous move that can bring a lot of benefits for our sport.

Miami is very special for me because it’s where I won my first ATP Masters 1000 title in 2007.

“It’s opened a lot of doors for me and made me believe in myself even more. I’m trying to refresh those memories, even though it’s a different venue, and I feel ready to perform here.”
