Speaking at the EU Summit in Brussels ahead of crunch talks between national leaders, the Luxembourg PM hit out at Britain’s decision in 2016. When asked what he wanted from the UK, he told reporters: “I want you to stay in my family. That you have a new referendum and electors to be really informed about the situation.
“If you do a second vote that will be the best thing.”
Mr Bettel spoke out against an extension which Mrs May is currently seeking.
The prime minister said: “There is no interest for the UK to keep connected to EU. We have been speaking for months and years about this.
“I have the feeling I’m in the waiting room in Waiting For Godot. And it will never come.
“You wait for something that never comes and we are still waiting on the bench.
“If we are not able to find an agreement in the House of Commons we are heading for no deal.”
Later, speaking to German journalists, he said: “They have decided on the 29th March, not us. The date was set by GB. I believe there definitely should not be a delay until after the European elections.
“That would be a catastrophe. We have to have clarity before the European elections and the Brits have to have left.
“Or sign the deal. It can’t happen after the EU elections.”
