Turkey earthquake: 5.7 magnitude quake strikes sending tremors through tourist hotspots

The European earthquake monitoring service said the quake measured 6.4 magnitude. The quake was also felt in the neighbouring Izmir and Antalya. Two aftershocks, measuring magnitude 4.8 and 4.5, were also recorded following the earthquake.

The mayor of Denizli’s Acipayam district Hulusi Sevkan told broadcaster NTV he had received no immediate reports of casualties in his district, near the epicentre of the tremor.

He said: “There is no loss of life or wounded. There are reports that some wooden houses have been damaged.”

Izmit in Turkey was struck by a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in 1999, which killed more than 17,000 people and caused widespread damage.
