Timo Werner: Germany star expected to leave RB Leipzig – but Liverpool will not get him

And there will likely be plenty of club scouts watching the 23-year-old in action.

Werner is set to lead the Germany line into a new era for the 2014 world champions – and tonight will prove a big test.

Germany manager Joachim Low has axed a number of experienced players from his squad, as he eyes qualification for Euro 2020.

Werner already has 23 caps for Germany and tonight will be expected to hold the line against a mean Serbia defence.

And there is one club that will be watching his performance with keen interest.

That club is Bayern Munich, who are expected to beat off rival suitors to land Werner in the summer.

Liverpool have been linked with a deal for Werner for months – yet manager Jurgen Klopp appears a long way off securing a move.

Rumours of a January swoop came and went, and it now seems likely that Liverpool’s interest in the player has died.

That may well be in part because Bayern are on the verge of securing a deal.

According to German football magazine Kicker, Leipzig and Bayern have been in ‘intense negotiations’ over a deal for Werner in recent weeks.

Leipzig are desperate to keep their whizz kid but he only has one year left on his contract, so it makes sense to sell him in the summer rather than lose him for nothing 12 months later.

Whether Bayern can come to an agreement before the end of the season remains to be seen.

But Leipzig were hopeful in January that Werner would sign a new deal.

German newspaper Bild revealed two months ago that Leipzig’s contract offer would include a clause, stipulating Werner could leave if a suitable offer came in from a select list of European giants.

It is unlikely that Bayern – a domestic rival of Leipzig in the Bundesliga – would be on that list.

Securing Werner down to a new contract would greatly boost Leipzig’s negotiating power over a player tipped for big things in the coming years.

Werner has scored nine goals in 23 appearances for Germany and helped his country to Confederations Cup glory in 2017.

A move to Liverpool – as unlikely as that now seems – would see him link up with former Leipzig man Naby Keita.
