Federer was surprisingly beaten by 25-year-old Thiem in three sets on Sunday.
Less than 24 hours later the Swiss legend had travelled to Miami and started practising for this week’s tournament.
Federer lost in the first round of the Miami Open last year, going out in three sets to Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Former British No 1 Greg Rusedski is expecting a better performance this year from Federer.
However, he has warned the 37-year-old his upcoming opponents would have watched closely how Thiem triumphed over him earlier this week.
“Well I expect a good week but players will have watched how Dominic Thiem played against Roger Federer as well,” Rusedski said on Amazon Prime UK.
“Conditions are slower in Miami and last year he lost in the first round.
“I expect him to bounce back in the new facility because it’s in the football stadium now.
“It looks absolutely amazing.”
Thiem’s win at Indian Wells for his first career Masters 1000 title.
And Rusedski is predicting the Austrian to have another good week in Miami.
“But the player I am excited about is Thiem because with slower conditions, that’s only going to help him,” he continued.
“And Dominic Thiem now is back in the top five in the world again.
“So don’t be surprised if the goals have changed with Dominic and his coach now, thinking ‘hey, I belong in that top four’, because going from five to four is tough, four to three, two to one.
“It’s a monumental task to go up by ones now.”
