Man Utd VAR controversy: Penalty DENIED against Wolves before Lindelof red card overturned

VAR has already proved controversial in the FA Cup this weekend, with Manchester City twice benefiting from the LACK of video technology in their 3-2 win over Swansea.

United were playing Wolves at Molineux tonight with VAR in use at the Premier League ground.

But referee Martin Atkinson did not take advantage of video technology when United appealed for a penalty.

Minutes before half time Diogo Dalot had a shot at the end of the area that was blocked by Wolves star Jonny.

It appears as though the ball struck the Wolves man’s arm – but Atkinson pointed for a corner.

And when United players appealed to the ref, Atkinson waved away their protests.

The referee was seen touching his earpiece – possibly being told that his decision was correct.

But these images from BBC Sport slow the ball DID in fact hit Jonny’s arm.

Whether or not the arm was in an irregular position is up for debate.

But United got the rub of the green with a very similar decision in the Champions League against PSG earlier this month.

It was Dalot again who had a shot in Paris, which hit Presnel Kimpembe on the arm and resulted in a penalty.

The converted spot kick from Marcus Rashford earned United safe passage to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Discussing the incident at Wolves, Ian Wright said on the BBC: “It was a penalty the other day and this is the same.

“It’s hit him. It’s no different for me look – it’s hit him.

“It hits his arm there.

“The problem I’ve got with that is it’s directly on target and his hands have stopped it.”

Amazingly, it was not the last time VAR was to controversially make a stand tonight.

Late in the game with Wolves leading 2-0, Atkinson sent Victor Lindelof off for a rash challenge on Diogo Jota.

Atkinson brandished the red card but then went to VAR, where his television official overturned the decision and Atkinson was made to hand Lindelof a yellow.
