Comic Relief 2019: ‘Am I dead?’ Julia Montague ALIVE as Bodyguard series two returns?

Comic Relief 2019 raised a staggering £63million last night as stars from across the music, television and film industry came together for a good cause.

During the evening, viewers were treated to a potential teaser trailer for season two of BBC One’s hit drama Bodyguard.

The charity sketch saw Keeley Hawes return as Home Secretary Julia Montague, after apparently being killed off in series one last autumn.

In the short clip, bodyguard David Budd (played by Richard Madden) was seen protecting a new Prime Minister, none other than Joanna Lumley.

Stuck in traffic, Joanna asks: “What appears to be the hold up?” and David replies: “Standby ma’am,” before asking into his walkie talkie: “0079 outbound with south fire request [update]”.

Returning his call out is none other than Line Of Duty’s Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and he says: “It’s an ongoing anti corruption investigation.”

To add to this, David then realises there is someone checking out their vehicle.

As tension builds, Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) comes into view and states: “PS Budd.”

“What seems to be the problem sir? You can see who I’ve got in the back,” David enquires.

“There’s only one thing I’m interested in and one thing only, and that’s bent coppers,” Ted argues before returning to the boot of the car, tapping it and asking: “What have you got in here then?”

Fearing he is about to get rumbled, David sternly states: “Nothing”, but Ted ignores him and requests: “Open her up!”

There in the car boot is none other than a very much alive Julia. “Busted!” She exclaims.

Jumping out, the camera then returns to Joanna in the back of the car who asks: “Everything sorted David?” And whilst he reassures her, viewers were given an even bigger surprise.

Exiting the car, Joanna is then seen dropping to the floor closely followed by Julia taking her place.

“Drive!” Julia orders and David requests on the radio: “Lavender outbound.”

“Do you know if I’m in series two?” Julia enquires and David clarifies: “You’re dead.”

Throwing suspicion around, Julia argues: “Am I?” to which David reiterates: “You’re dead,” but Julia simply continues with: “Am I?”

Those watching the segment at home took to Twitter to discuss whether or not this was writer Jed Mercurio’s way of suggesting Julia will be returning in the highly anticipated series two of Bodyguard.

One Tweeted: “OOOOO ‘You’re dead’ ‘Am I?’ Can’t freaking wait for series 2 #Bodyguard #ComicRelief2019.”

“PLEASE BE IN SERIES 2!!!!! @Misskeeleyhawes #ComicRelief2019,” someone begged.

Julia to David.

A third commented: “BUT IS JULIA DEAD?!!! #ComicRelief2019.”

“‘You’re dead’ ‘Am I?’ ‘You’re dead’ ‘Am I?’ Please god can you imagine #Bodygaurd #ComicRelief2019,” another wrote.

“Loved the bodyguard update! #ComicRelief2019,” someone stated.

Others were pleased to see Jed’s two iconic show’s crossing over, with many suggesting it should actually happen and not just for a charity sketch.

“Finally the bodyguard-line of duty cross over we have all been waiting for #ComicRelief2019,” a fan remarked.

Another added: “Ted <3 #ComicRelief2019 loved him being in the Bodyguard sketch.”

Episode one of Bodyguard series one was the biggest new drama launch in the UK last year, and earned the title of the most-watched BBC drama in a decade.

As for whether a second series is going to come to the BBC later this year or even next, show producer Jed was “just beginning” talks with the broadcaster back in September.

In November, lead actor Richard gave fans an update to Deadline when he said he was “going to meet Jed in a couple of weeks, to have a chat and see what’s in his brilliant brain”.

Nevertheless, Jed’s originally baby Line Of Duty is going to be back on screens for series five next month.

Comic Relief is available to catch up on the BBC iPlayer. Bodyguard series one is also on the BBC iPlayer and Netflix and Line Of Duty returns to BBC One in April.
