Comic Relief 2019: Four Weddings and a Funeral clip DIVIDES viewers with unexpected twist

Comic Relief 2019 gave Four Weddings and a Funeral fans a special treat with an update on the 90s classic film, written and directed by the legendary Richard Curtis.

Yet as the two-parter came to a close on BBC One, many viewers were left wondering how to feel after the unexpected segment.

For one thing, instead of focusing on the original characters, the scenes were centred around the wedding of Hugh’s character Charles’ daughter and Kristin Scott Thomas’s character Fiona’s daughter – played by Lily James and Alicia Vikander respectively.

The new mini-movie featured a scene-stealing comedic turn from Rowan Atkinson as the returning priest, and fans were delighted to see the two main characters from the original still together.

But despite this, many felt the jokes didn’t quite land and were expecting a rather different storyline.

Taking to Twitter, viewers shared their feelings on the segment.

“I am meant to be laughing at this Four weddings and a funeral sketch. #comicrelief2019,” one person wrote.

Another slated: “Didn’t think it could get worse but part two of Four Weddings is appalling and so not funny. Disappointed doesn’t cover it #comicrelief2019.”

“Four weddings sketch is utter shite!! #comicrelief2019,” a third agreed.

While a fourth said: “#FourWeddingsAndAFuneral and #comicrelief2019 just a general cringe fest. Time to get rid of Richard Curtis.”

Others were impressed with the reunion, and insisted it was a warm and brilliant edition to the story.

“The Four Weddings sketch was fantastic! Richard Curtis has always been my biggest inspiration as a screenwriter and this was yet another success,” one fan praised.

Another gushed: “The Four Weddings reunion was a nice little trip down Nostalgia Lane, also a shame that the wonderful Emma Chambers is no longer with us to have been part of it. Still much missed to this day. xx #ComicRelief #comicrelief2019.”

“Four Weddings the reunion! Superb! Well done Richard Curtis and #comicrelief2019,” a third simply declared.

And a fourth shared: “I’m really enjoying the Four Weddings #comicrelief2019 sketch, it’s quite nice to see that none of the characters are miserable and It is quite sweet and schmaltzy.”

The segment also revealed an unusual tidbit – a question unanswered by the original movie.

It turned out, Hugh and Andie’s characters – Charles and Carrie – never made it down the aisle.

Joking about never making the ultimate commitment, Charles whispered in the church: “Maybe I should have asked you to marry me.

“Maybe, it was raining that day,” Carrie recalled nonchalantly.

Comic Relief is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
