Chris Evans: 'I'm so sorry' Virgin Radio host apologises to guest after on-air blunder

The 52-year-old Virgin Radio Breakfast Show host recently took a call from a female listener hoping to win one of his on-air competitions. The woman had the option of picking one of two answers to his question about Formula One motor racing. She could choose between Mark Weber or Daniel Ricciardo, and immediately named Ricciardo as the correct answer. However, she quickly changed her mind and picked the former, putting Chris Evans in a sticky situation.

“No it was definitely Weber, definitely Weber I’m sure about it now,” the caller declared.

“Oh please! Yes Weber – final answer,” to which Chris asked his team: “Do we have to take her first answer?”

Speaking to the female caller, the radio DJ added: “Was that a definite answer, firm first answer?”

“It was a mulling things over answer, the final answer is Weber,” she replied, as the host giggled in the background.

He continued: “Oh sounds like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, this isn’t Who Wants To Be A Millionaire it’s three in a row.

“OK we’re going to go to our executive producer and we’re going to tell you whether or not we’re going to take that answer.”

Introducing the producer to the show, he exclaimed: “Mike is here, he’s the boss of the station. We have to take your first answer.

“And you did say it out loud on the radio, you did say Daniel Ricciardo; I’m sorry!”

As the woman begged the father-of-five to accept her second answer, he insisted: “That’s your first answer.

“We have to take your first answer. It was Mark Weber, we have to take your first answer.”

“Sorry sweetheart, we did explain the rules to you before you came on didn’t we?” he stated.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry that’s the way the cookie crumbles, we have to be completely fair.”

Naturally, the woman was disappointed and appeared to sob on-air as the star explained the rules to her.

Elsewhere, Chris has previously spoken out about appearing on the next series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The star has continually said he is set to join the line-up when it returns in September to BBC One, despite an official announcement not yet being made.

Virgin Radio Breakfast Show with Chris Evans continues weekdays at 6.30am.
