Captain Marvel box office: Captain Marvel STAGGERS as it makes HUGE amount on opening

Captain Marvel is the first solo female-led superhero film for Marvel and is taking cinemas by storm since its arrival last week. The 21st instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hauled in a staggering sum at the domestic box office. And the amount sees Captain Marvel secure its spot as the seventh biggest Marvel debut of all time.

How much did Captain Marvel make at the Box Office?

Captain Marvel raked in a whopping $153 million (£117 million) during its debut weekend in the USA.

The latest Marvel film was estimated for a $125 million opening weekend.

But Disney saw a strong Thursday and Friday at the Box Office, seeing takings soar.

Captain Marvel is now the third highest March debut of all time in the USA.

And the MCU instalment is also the seventh biggest Marvel debut of all time – coming in behind Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3.

Internationally, Captain Marvel has grossed an estimated $302 million – meaning it could rake in an estimated total of $455m globally.

This makes it the fifth highest international opening weekend of all time and the second highest superhero opening weekend of all time – with Avengers: Infinity War taking the top spot at an opening of $640m.

Marvel Studios now has seven of the top 20 film debuts in industry history and Disney holds 12 of the top 20.

The opening weekend takings are also the biggest for a female-led film.

Brie Larson said: “I don’t know how it’s any different. To be honest, I don’t want it to feel different.

“I’m kind of over the ‘First female blah blah blah,’ and ‘Wow, maybe women can actually do the same things that dudes can do – what a crazy concept!’

“I feel like the more we talk about it, the more we perpetuate the myth that it’s an impossible task.

“No, if it wasn’t like that before, it’s because it was wrong. That was just wrong. Now we’re just doing what’s natural.”

Captain Marvel is now in cinemas.
