The Gabon international scored Arsenal’s second goal of the match from the spot after his strike partner Alexandre Lacazette was brought down in the box by Fred.
The nerves of Arsenal fans around the world were jangling as he ran up to take the spot-kick as he missed a penalty against Tottenham last weekend.
Aubameyang made no mistake, though, passing the ball straight down the middle after giving David de Gea the eyes.
The former Borussia Dortmund man reflected on his penalty shortly after the match and insisted he was ‘confident’ he’d find the back of the net.
“I was confident, my team-mates give me a lot of confidence,” he told Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp. “Laca [Lacazette] gave me the penalty and that was cool from him, I was really focused.
“I made a mistake against Tottenham, looking down at the last moment, not watching Lloris, but today I watched until the end and being focused you score a penalty.
“I know where the ball is and you have to practice this all the time, and today it went in!
“I knew that it would be tough, but I was feeling confident and if I missed this one, what can I say?”
The referee’s decision to award the spot-kick was a controversial one as it seemed that there was minimal contact between Fred and Lacazette.
Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness shares that opinion, saying: “I think it is more about the two thighs coming together and knocking him off his stride.
“I think the first connection that causes both of them to fall is the right thigh meeting the left thigh – that’s knocked him off track – then both of them go.
“Fred is now falling and then the elbow comes afterwards.”
United had a slew of chances to take the lead in the first half but were unable to find a way past Gunners stopper Bernd Leno.
“We started slow, maybe a backlash from Wednesday night,” caretaker Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “We created chances, that’s the thing.
“We created so many more chances today than, for example, than when we beat them in the cup. We hit the woodwork, we had big chances – sometime strikers take them, sometimes they don’t. We played a better game then but that doesn’t help the result.”
United will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday when they take on Wolves in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will next be in action on Thursday when they welcome Rennes to the Emirates for the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.
