Missing Briton Tom Ballard found on mountain in Pakistan a fortnight after loss of contact

Rescuers found the remains of Mr Ballard and Italian Daniele Nardi after the pair had not made contact for two weeks.

Mr Ballard was born in Derbyshire and moved to the Scottish Highlands in 1995 around the same time he lost his mother Alison Hargreaves.

She died on K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, aged 33, months after becoming the first woman to reach the peak of Everest unaided.

The Italian ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo tweeted: “With great sadness I inform that the search for @NardiDaniele and Tom Ballard is over as @AlexTxikon an the search team have confirmed that the silhouettes spotted on Mummery at about 5,900 metres are those of Daniele and Tom, RIP.”
