John Barnes MBE made his name as a left winger, playing for Watford and later Liverpool, in the 1980s and 1990s. He also played for the England national team 79 different times. Born and initially raised in Jamaica, John and his family moved to London when he was just 12 years old. Fast forward five years, in 1981, he joined Watford Football Club at the age of 17.
It was two years later, in 1983, when the footballer made his debut as part of the England squad.
His career going from strength-to-strength, four years later, John joined Liverpool for a £900,000 deal.
After 10 years playing for Liverpool, in 1997, John joined Newcastle United.
And, two years later, in 1999, the sportsman ended his football playing career with Charlton Athletic F.C, in south-east London.
However, it certainly wasn’t the end of the road in terms of John’s involvement in the sport.
He became head coach of Celtic that year, except he lost the gig the following year.
John has also worked as a football manager.
He managed the Jamaica national team between 2008 and 2009, as well as Birkenhead’s Tranmere Rovers F.C for four months in 2009.
These days, the father-of-seven spends some of his time on the small screen.
As well as offering commentary on football, last year, he starred on the reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother.
It came 11 years after he competed in the 2007 series of Strictly Come Dancing.
