Justin Trudeau BOMBSHELL: How advert likened Canadian PM to Donald Trump

On Thursday, Canada’s Prime Minister called a news conference to address allegations that improper pressure was put on former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to help construction firm SNC-Lavalin Group avoid criminal prosecution. Mr Trudeau denied interfering in his country’s judicial system, but refused to apologise, claiming only that lessons had been learnt. Trudeau came to power in November 2015 promising “sunny ways”, a more “transparent” government and more women in the cabinet.

However, two female ministers quit over the SNC-Lavalin scandal and Mr Trudeau is now accused of trying to arrange a deal with a major company.

Following the statement, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh launched a scathing attack on Mr Trudeau, claiming the Prime Minister’s words lacked accountability.

However, it is not the first time the NDP has criticised Mr Trudeau for his lack of accountability and it is also not the first time the Canadian has been at the centre of controversy.

A few months before Mr Trudeau was elected Prime Minister in 2015, the NDP produced an advert which attempted to align the Liberal Party leader’s politics to the US President.

The advert showed Mr Trudeau speaking in Montreal during his campaign, telling a crowd that there were “no circumstances” in which he would support former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Mr Trudeau said: “I have spent my entire political career fighting against Mr Harper’s narrow and meaner vision of what Canada can be and the government should do.”

After the speech, a rewind sound effect then cued in cacophony circus music and the advert showed a reel of Mr Trudeau’s past remarks about Bill C-51 and the Keystone XL pipeline.

In the video, the NDP claims there was a link between Mr Trudeau, Mr Harper and at the time US Presidential candidate Donald Trump as they all supported the Keystone pipeline.

The advert said: “When it counted, Justin Trudeau didn’t stand up to Stephen Harper.”

The Liberal Party responded to the advert by calling it a “weak” attempt to discredit Mr Trudeau.

Liberal spokesperson Jean-Luc Ferland told The Huffington Post Canada at the time: “It’s no surprise the NDP is on the attack. Having adopted Stephen Harper’s budget, they are left with nothing more than broken promises.

“This latest release is just a weak attempt to change the channel.”

The Keystone Pipeline System is an oil pipeline system in Canada and the US, commissioned in 2010. It is now owned solely by TransCanada Corporation.

The pipeline became well-known when a planned fourth phase, Keystone XL, attracted opposition from environmentalists, becoming a symbol of the battle over climate change and fossil fuel.

In 2015, it was delayed by by then–President Barack Obama but, on January 24, 2017, President Donald Trump claimed he intended to permit the pipeline’s completion.

On November 8, 2018, a federal judge in Montana blocked construction of the pipeline’s fourth phase as it did not comply with federal environmental regulations.
