Rashida Tlaib, who was elected to the House of Representatives in November’s midterm elections, said she will soon file the necessary paperwork to attempt to remove the US leader from the White House. The freshman congresswoman caused controversy on her first day in office when she delivered a profanity-laced vow to impeach President Trump. Revealing her plan today, she insisted the president must be investigated for violating the US constitution, adding: “anybody else would already be in impeachment proceedings”.
She said: “Later on this month, I will be joining folks and advocates across the country to file the impeachment resolution to start the impeachment proceedings.”
But the move is at odds with the views of senior Democrats who have downplayed talk of impeachment.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has previously warned that the process would be “disruptive”.
She said: “It’s an opportunity cost in terms of time and resources.
“You don’t want to go down that path unless it is unavoidable.”
Dismissing Ms Tlaib’s calls for him to be removed from office, Mr Trump told reporters in January: “You can’t impeach somebody that’s doing a great job.”
