PSG vs Man Utd LIVE: Teams confirmed, Champions League news and fixtures, Paul Pogba out

PSG vs Manchester United: Champions League score, goals and updates

PSG 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | LUKAKU (2)

PSG XI: Buffon, Kehrer, Thiago Silva, Kimpembe, Bernat, Verratti, Marquinhos, Dani Alves, Draxler, Di Maria, Mbappe

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Young, Bailly, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Pereira, Rashford, Lukaku

  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side trail 2-0 on aggregate
  • Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly, Juan Mata and several other first-team players absent
  • Edinson Cavani returns from injury – named on bench
  • Romelu Lukaku opens the scoring inside two minutes

PSG 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

7: Marcus Rashford sends pulses racing when breaking free of Kehrer on the left touchline. He looks for Lukaku in the middle but Silva heads clear. PSG look rattled.

4: Romelu Lukaku’s goal for Man Utd after just 1 minute 51 seconds is their fastest scored in a Champions League knockout match since Wayne Rooney scored after 63 seconds against Bayern Munich in March 2010.

PSG 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED | LUKAKU

2: It’s the perfect start for Manchester United, who have pulled one back inside two minutes!

Silva’s ghastly squared pass for Kimpembe is short and the alert Romelu Lukaku pounces. The Belgian’s first touch is poor and he looks to have overrun it – but somehow manages to round the goalkeeper and convert.

This is big folks.

1: Ah… I feared this would happen. Angel Di Maria has already started with the theatrics when challenged early by the lesser-spotted Fred. The Argentine hits the deck and rolls about before hopping to his feet. 60 seconds wasted.

PSG 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

1: And we’re off! Manchester United have 90 minutes to pull off one of the all-time Champions League shocks. Couldn’t think of a better manager to lead them into the fray.

Incidentally, It’s absolutely pouring it down in Paris. Nice of United to bring the weather with them.

Prediction time

19:57: OK, just three minutes until we’re underway here in Paris. I spy Eric Cantona and Sir Alex Ferguson inside the Parc des Princes. And no, they aren’t sitting together…

I’d love to believe in miracles folks but I just can’t see it happening tonight. 2-0 to PSG.

‘We have players who are fresh’

19:54: Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells BT Sport: “We go into this game positively, knowing the players starting are all full internationals. We have players who are fresh, not played too much so we have to look at the positives.

“When you go to places like this, you have to stay in the game. We will have to play well with the ball and defend well. We need the first goal, we cannot give them that, it will be over if we do.

“Andrea Pereira scored a fantastic goal at the weekend and we have players who can create moments of magic. We have strong players from set-pieces so we are confident we can cause problems. Romelu Lukaku is in great form and he has really turned a corner, he has worked hard and is getting his rewards.”

Interesting…

19:50: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that 17-year-old Mason Greenwood was the most likely of the three Manchester United youngsters to play tonight.

“If we’re chasing that one goal then he’s the most likely to come on,” Solskjaer explained.

Ole, Ole, Ole…

19:48: Manchester United’s baby-faced assassin Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is speaking to BT Sport.

The Norwegian remains positive about his sides chances and highlights the fact that all 11 of his starters are full internationals… which makes sense… I suppose.

He also says he will have no hesitation in throwing on his youngsters towards the end of the game if they need a goal.

Paulo Dybala rumour

19:45: You got time for some gossip? This is a one-way relationship so I’m going to tell you anyway.

Manchester United are looking to make a £120million move for Paulo Dybala if Romelu Lukaku leaves in the summer, The Sun reports.

The Argentinian Juventus star has impressed Old Trafford scouts, and has been identified as a player who could help United challenge for the Premier League title, the paper claims.

What d’ya reckon about that? Would you swap Rom for Dybala? Let me know in the comments section at the bottom of the page or on Twitter using the hashtag #ExpressSport.

Twitter round-up

Robin: Zero nerves tonight. Even if we somehow go 2-0 up. OGS has rescued a dead season. No matter what happens between now and may, he is our manager. Has been class. Every game is a free game for him. Win, lose or draw. The fact we have any hope shows the job he’s done.

Michael: Thomas Tuchel looks like a good guy!

Jan: I DO believe in miracles, but those teams who produced those wonders were packed with quality players who made those magics come true. What do we have NOW? McTominay? A championship footballer? I’m not going to be unrealistic.

Thanks for your contribution, Michael. He does look a nice chap.

Neville says

19:40: Gary Neville: “I will be surprised if Solskjaer isn’t awarded the job during the International break in the next couple of weeks. I’m certain United will appoint him.”

Can’t argue with that from Manchester United royalty.

Speaking of Kylian…

19:38: PSG’s Mbappe has scored in six of his seven Champions League appearances against British clubs (six goals in total).

He has scored 14 goals in the Champions League; two more than any other player has netted as an under-21 player in the history of the competition.

Can United stop Mbappe and Co?

19:35: Even without Edinson Cavani and Neymar, PSG managed to give United a headache at Old Trafford last month.

Mbappe’s pace and directness were too much, while Angel Di Maria relished the chance to get one over his former side.

Cavani is also among the substitutes, meaning United have another challenge to contend with in the French capital.

Solskjaer has underlined the importance of scoring the first goal tonight, but PSG’s attacking options make that easier said than done.

Elsewhere…

19:30: Nicolo Zaniolo emerged as the latest whizzkid on the European scene after his two goals gave Roma the edge over Porto in the first leg.

The 19-year-old, one of the few bright spots in a disappointing season for Roma, opened the scoring when he controlled Edin Dzeko’s pass before drilling a low effort past Iker Casillas.

He added a second from six yards out after Dzeko’s shot came back off a post.

But Porto gave themselves a chance with an away goal from Adrian Lopez to make it all to play for at the Estadio do Dragao.

Porto XI: Casillas, Militao, Felipe, Pepe, Alex Telles, Otavio, Danilo, Herrera, Corona, Marega, Soares

Roma XI: Olsen, Juan Jesus, Manolas, Marcano, Karsdrop, Nzonzi, De Rossi, Kolarov, Zaniolo, Dzeko, Perotti

Will PSG bottle it?

19:25: PSG showed enough at Old Trafford to worry United, although Solskjaer was quick to point to their soft underbelly in his pre-match press conference.

“I don’t want to call it strange, but last year Juventus lost 3-0 at home against Real Madrid and suddenly they were 3-0 up after 90 minutes against Madrid away,” the Norwegian boss said. “The year before that, PSG against Barcelona. We all remember those results.”

Many of the players remain from the PSG side that won their last-16 clash with Barca 4-0 at home, only to fall to a 6-1 loss in the second leg and bow out.

Barcelona’s side that night?

Ter Stegen, Mascherano, Pique, Umtiti, Busquets, Rafinha, Rakitic, Iniesta, Neymar, Messi, Suarez.

Twitter round-up

Jason: If Solskjaer pulls this one off you can forget the United job, he’ll be in for the Real job instead.

Bezaleel: Tonight, Manchester United have to make a statement. Not just any statement but a statement of intent. This is the time for OGS to tell the boys how Manchester United bounced back at Nou Camp in 1999 to win the trophy. That will surely help the players.

Mark: If Herrera, Pogba, Martial, Matic and Lingard were available this would still be a mountainous task, but without them I fear the worse, just hope Ole can continue weaving his magic. Maybe.

Rio believes…

19:15: BT Sport’s coverage is underway with charismatic trio Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves… banter off the scale obviously.

Manchester United legend Ferdinand started the show with a passionate speech, claiming ‘anything is possible’ in football.

Michael Owen then said something… but I immediately zoned out. My apologies.

Team news – PSG

19:12: Thomas Tuchel sticks with the same PSG starting line-up that won 2-0 at Old Trafford in February, although Edinson Cavani has returned to the bench after injury.

And yes, Premier League legend Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is on the bench…

Team news – Manchester United

19:08: Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford lead the line for injury-hit Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turns to a 3-5-2 formation against PSG.

With Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Ander Herrera among 10 absentees for the Champions League last-16 clash, Solskjaer has seemingly selected a three-man backline flanked by wing-backs Ashley Young and Luke Shaw.

Mason Greenwood, James Garner, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes are named on a callow United bench for the second leg in the French capital.

Shaw to pour… forward

19:05: That terrible headline relates to Luke Shaw, who will adopt a different role this evening.

Jason Burt of the Telegraph believes Shaw will be deployed in a more advanced position, perhaps as a winger or in midfield.

Somewhere in the world Jose Mourinho is laughing like a Bond villain…

Will a new star emerge?

19:00: I mentioned that Manchester United didn’t have a lot of experience on the bench – but could that see a new hero emerge?

Three years on from relative unknown Marcus Rashford bursting onto the scene in a European match, the likes of Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner are among those hoping to make their mark.

All three have made their debuts, unlike fellow talented teenagers Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams. The latter was as surprised as anyone with his inclusion in the 20-man squad and much is expected of 17-year-old Greenwood.

The starting XI…

18:55: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names the strongest possible XI… but that bench looks worrying.

Garner, Gomes, Chong, Greenwood… Not a lot of experience to change things.

PSG XI: Buffon, Kehrer, Thiago Silva, Kimpembe, Bernat, Verratti, Marquinhos, Dani Alves, Draxler, Di Maria, Mbappe.

Subs: Areola, Paredes, Cavani, Meunier, Choupo-Moting, Kurzawa, Dagba.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Young, Bailly, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Pereira, Rashford, Lukaku.

Subs: Romero, Dalot, Rojo, Garner, Gomes, Chong, Greenwood

Twitter round-up

Adam: They say you should follow your dreams. So tonight I’m sticking £5 on a 3-1 Manchester United win tonight. Woke up this morning after a vivid dream that Romelu Lukaku (2) and Marcus Rashford (1) got the goals.

Said: For me I’ll be happy if we can put up a good fight and stay in the game! Marco Verratti against Scott McTominay… naaa it’s not happening! Stay in the game for first 30 minutes then maybe just maybe!

Abu-Bark: All out attack, leave with no regrets. Let’s do this United!

Are you sure that was a dream and you weren’t watching a Betfair advert whilst in bed, Adam?

All aboard the hype train

18:45: Manchester United’s social media team have put together an inspirational video for tonight’s clash.

It’s quite a new phenomenon for Premier League clubs to do this in Europe these days. It’s a shame we don’t have these for mid-table Premier League games.

Who wouldn’t want to see a montage of Watford vs West Ham put to Titanic music? Anyway, the video is below if you fancy ‘getting all the feels’ as one Twitter user described it…

United down to the bare bones

18:40: If United’s challenge was not hard enough in the French capital, they arrive without 10 players.

Paul Pogba’s red card at the end of the first leg compounded the loss and ruled him out of the Parc des Princes clash, which fellow midfielders Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will also miss.

The absence of Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian diminishes Solskjaer’s defensive options, while in attack Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez are out through injury.

Can United make history?

18:35: Sorry, don’t quite know what happened with that introduction below. I think I got a bit carried away.

Good to know that Screenwriting degree has been put to good use though…

Believe it or not, the 2-0 first leg defeat to PSG was United’s heaviest ever home loss in European competition.

Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe did the damage at Old Trafford last month and leave things looking bleak for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

UEFA research shows that of the 106 teams that have previously secured a 2-0 first-leg away win in European Cup history, all 106 have made it through.

Furthermore, United have never come back from a first-leg home defeat to win the tie in UEFA competition.

Evening…

18:30: Before we get started, I’ll need you to imagine the Mission Impossible theme playing quietly in the background.

I would have embedded the song but I’m worried Tom Cruise will knock on my door and demand payment…

Manchester United have an absolute mountain to climb and will need to rewrite the history books to progress to the quarter-finals.

“Dum da-da-dum da….”

All 106 teams that have previously secured a 2-0 first leg away win in the European Cup have made it through.

History isn’t the only thing in PSG’s favour – Ole Gunner Solskjaer is also without 10 first-team players for the trip to the Parc des Princes.

“Dum dum!”

Manchester United’s mission, should they choose to accept it, is to take a depleted squad to Paris to overturn a two-goal deficit against one of the best sides in Europe.

Warning: This message will self destruct in 5 seconds…
