Macron PLOT BACKFIRES: French president has HELPED populists – 'very good for Salvini'

Speaking to France24, the founder of The European Post claimed Emmanuel Macron’s interview with Italian channel Rai helped Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio’s alliance to strengthen against pro-European and traditional parties in Italy and across the bloc. Mr Gombacci claimed that whilst the French President’s appeal received good feedback in his home country, it served as proof President Macron is “contradictive”.

He said: “During his interview, Macron was speaking to his own voters. In fact, my French colleagues say that the interview had good feedback in France.

“But in Italy, he was strongly criticised because he was speaking about European values but until now the Italians saw that Macron was defending French interests and not European interests.

“So he was contradictory in what he was saying.

“And this was very good for Di Maio, it was good for Salvini.

“It was good in France for Macron but for the traditional parties that are trying to use a different narrative it was very bad.”

On Monday, the French President wrote an open letter published in newspapers in all 28 European states highlighting his vision for the future of the EU.

In his letter, President Macron also launched an anti-Brexit rant warning the UK’s exit is a “danger” to the future of the EU.

He wrote that the UK’s decision to leave the EU symbolised a crisis in which the EU was failing to respond to “its peoples’ needs for protection from the major shocks of the modern world”.

He wrote: “Never since the second world war has Europe been so essential. Yet never has Europe been in such danger.

“Brexit stands as the symbol of that. It symbolises the crisis of a Europe that has failed to respond to its peoples’ need for protection from the major shocks of the modern world. It also symbolises the European trap.”

Mr Macron added: “The trap lies not in being part of the European Union; the trap is in the lie and the irresponsibility that can destroy it.

“Who told the British people the truth about their post-Brexit future? Who spoke to them about losing access to the EU market?

“Who mentioned the risks to peace in Ireland of restoring the border?

“Retreating into nationalism offers nothing; it is rejection without an alternative.

“And this is the trap that threatens the whole of Europe: the anger mongers, backed by fake news, promise anything and everything.”
