Huawei Mate X could be challenged by two different Galaxy Fold phones from Samsung

Huawei Mate X was announced at the Chinese firm’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) keynote that took place days after the Galaxy Fold was shown off in full by Samsung.

The biggest difference between the two flexible flagships is the fact both take a different approach when it comes to actually folding the hardware.

Samsung’s handset folds on top of itself, meaning the product effectively doubles in thickness at the same time.

This method also requires the Galaxy Fold to have both a main panel and a cover display.

Meanwhile, the Mate X folds over itself, away from the user.

This means the device only requires a single 8-inch screen.

Huawei Mate X is powered by the firm’s Kirin 980 chipset, has a 4,500mAh battery and four cameras.

When it was unveiled, many praised the Mate X for having a more appealing design than than the Galaxy Fold.

One Android fan that took to Twitter said: “I’m a big fan of Samsung, but seriously this looks better than Samsung Galaxy Fold.

“Well done Huawei! I’m going for this mobile!”

Another stated: “This is better Huawei Mobile than the Galaxy Fold.”

A third declared: “Looks way better than Samsung.”

Following its unveiling, Express.co.uk went hands-on with the product and said we believe it is “the first foldable phone you will actually want to buy”.

While many are praising the design of the Huawei Mate X, it appears Samsung has two new flexible phones in the works that both employ different folding methods, according to Bloomberg.

The outlet, citing people familiar with the South Korean OEM’s plans, stated Samsung is developing a “clamshell-like device” and another that “folds away from the user similar to Huawei Technologies Co.’s Mate X”.

Bloomberg declared Samsung intends to show off its vertically folding clamshell-like handset “late this year or early next year” and is still working on its final design.

It was noted the hardware in question currently has a screen on its outside, just like the Galaxy Fold.

However, it was said such a characteristic could be removed based on customer reactions to the cover display on the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung’s other device, that is claimed to fold in a similar fashion to the Huawei Mate X, was predicted to release after the clamshell-like flagship.

If the existence of the latter flagship is true, Samsung could staunchly rival the Mate X by offering a handset with a similar form factor and features.

It is worth noting the South Korean tech giant has not officially confirmed it is working on the products mentioned in the new report.
