Windows 10 update – Microsoft may soon challenge one of its biggest rivals

Windows 10 is Microsoft’s computer software that is harnessed across the globe.

The platform typically receives two substantial upgrades a year with the next overhaul expected to arrive in April.

Windows 10 is already available in a number of different varieties.

Windows 10 Home is described by Microsoft as the “consumer-focused desktop edition” of the software that is designed for PCs, tablets and two-in-ones.

There are also more nuanced versions of the operating system such as Windows 10 Education that are engineered for school requirements.

But it appears Microsoft is set to release a new version of Windows 10 that is designed for “dual-screen devices” and “Chromebook competitors”, according to a report from The Verge.

The outlet, citing sources “familiar” with Microsoft’s plans, said the new variation of the operating system could be called “Windows Lite” and provides a more “stripped-down” experience.

It was insisted Windows Lite has been engineered with dual-screen devices in mind but that it could also be used for foldable products, too.

Back in December Petri first reported Microsoft was working on a “Lite” version of Windows 10.

More recently, the outlet has created a mockup of what the new version of the operating system could look like.

The Verge said it understood the image displayed by Petri was accurate.

Windows 10 Lite was shown to look a lot more lightweight than traditional Windows 10.

A filing system was present in the centre of the display that provided access to the software’s array of applications.

There appeared to be a bar at the bottom that showed opened programmes.

Windows 10 Lite was said to be part of an effort from Microsoft to challenge Chrome OS.

Chrome OS is an operating system from Google that runs on computers and tablets.

The software is renowned for being extremely accessible, especially for cheaper computers that do not boast extreme amounts of power.

Chrome OS is certainly a staunch rival of Windows 10, especially where lower-end computers are concerned.

Petri noted Microsoft is targeting “entry-level devices” with Windows 10 Lite, but that it also anticipates attracting heavier users, too.

It was noted Windows 10 Lite still has a File Explorer fans of the Microsoft software have come to expect.

Petri said it anticipates Microsoft will discuss its new version of Windows 10 in spring this year and pointed to its annual Build developer conference taking place in May as a possible event for such details to be revealed.

However, it is worth noting nothing about a Lite version of Windows 10 has been officially confirmed or discussed by Microsoft.
