Google Pixel 3 update aims to fix this phone's biggest frustration

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL released at the tail end of last year and were certainly an incremental improvement over their respective predecessors.

As is standard with the product line, the Pixel 3 is the smaller of the two devices and is easier to use with one hand overall.

In contrast, the Pixel 3 XL offers a larger display and battery for fans to get excited about.

Besides differences in screen and battery sizes, both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL boast the same internals and features.

One of the most appealing aspects about the Google handset is the single 12.2-megapixel camera that sits on its rear.

Although the Pixel 3 only takes advantage of a single camera lens, it is capable of taking incredibly detailed snaps.

In fact, Express.co.uk said the Android flagship boasted the best main camera lens on any smartphone when we reviewed it.

But while the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL offer laudable camera systems, they had been hamstrung by stuttering software.

Many users had complained of the phone’s camera application taking a noticeable amount of time to load up when it was activated.

Express.co.uk has been using a Pixel 3 extensively since its launch and can confirm the software did not always launch immediately.

Such a problem is surely one of the phone’s biggest frustrations, as stuttering camera performance meant some subjects may have moved before the user had the opportunity to take a shot of them.

However, it appears Google is determined to remedy the Pixel 3’s camera issues in the phone’s March 2019 security patch.

In a bulletin discussing the changes introduced by the new update, Google emphasised the “startup and responsiveness” of the camera app should be improved.

It was also noted “storage performance” and “Bluetooth reliability” was also bettered thanks to the patch.

The new Pixel improvement is already rolling out to owners and can downloaded through the device’s system settings.

Some fans that have already downloaded the update have already taken to Twitter to note the marked difference in camera performance.

One said: “March security update really fixed up Pixel 3 XL for good finally. No more annoying lag when opening notifications from lock screen and camera starts up faster.

“They mentioned better Bluetooth but haven’t tested that yet.”

Another stated: “Camera lag really does seem to be gone on the Pixel 3 after the March security update. Thank God.”

A third Pixel owner declared: “Great job on the March 2019 patch for Pixel 3! My camera actually opens now. Excellent, I love my Pixel!!!”

A fourth Android fan remarked: “Just installed the latest Pixel 3 update – might be placebo, but the camera does feel faster, especially on startup when doing the ‘double tap power button while phone is locked’ thing.

“Also feels like taking multiple pics is quicker/smoother.”
