Stacey Dooley: 'It hurts' Strictly winner speaks out on ‘people making fun'

Stacey Dooley said “of course it hurts” when she reads “snooty comments” criticising her accent and the fact she left school at 16. The Strictly Come Dancing winner grew up on a council estate with her single mother Dianne, before bursting onto the television scene. The 31-year-old said she has “more life experiences” than most as she hit back in an interview with YOU Magazine last weekend. It comes after she was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting last year, but missed the ceremony.

Stacey told the publication: “Some people can’t believe the audacity of my covering important subjects.”

She continued after previously being branded “whiny”: “Of course it hurts when people make fun of how I talk.

“Especially when I’ve probably got more life experiences than someone who studied at Oxbridge and went straight into the Beeb.”

On when she’ll collect her MBE, she stated: “We’ll go sometime this year.”

Meanwhile, during her chat, Stacey broke her silence on Strictly co-star Seann Walsh’s kiss with married partner Katya Jones.

She stated: “When you do what I do for a living, in the scheme of things it doesn’t bother me who’s kissing who.”

But she did think fellow finalist Joe Sugg “had it in the bag” in the final: “But I never took it too seriously.”

Stacey added: “I always thought, ‘If I don’t nail the Foxtrot, no one is going to die’.”

She told her Instagram followers about her latest interview, in a post shared with her 683,000 fans.

“@youmagazine… Out this weekend… discussing Strictly and my docs we’ve filmed overseas, over the last decade,” she captioned it.

Wearing her tresses down in a loose wave, Stacey cut a glamorous figure in a silky gold dress.

It comes after her Strictly professional partner Kevin Clifton hit out after he was confirmed for the 2019 line-up today.

He claimed “nobody’s listening” when he said he does not want to leave the BBC show behind.

It comes after the 36-year-old lifted the Glitterball in December before skipping the tour to appear in musical Rock Of Ages.

Kevin told this week’s OK! Magazine: “I keep saying that I don’t want to leave Strictly, but nobody’s listening!”

Glow Up begins on Wednesday at 10.35pm on BBC One.
