Here's What Happens When Your Tire Explodes at 180 MPH

From Popular Mechanics

Ever wonder what happens when you blow a tire going 180 mph? Well, this video is a good demonstrator.

This clip was originally published in 2015, but we think it’s still relevant today. It shows a track-only 997-generation Porsche 911 RSR driven by Cory Friedman losing its right rear tire while going nearly 200 mph on the back straight of Daytona International Speedway. This happened during the Porsche Club of America’s October race that year.

As you can see, things could’ve ended up a lot worse for Friedman. From the rear camera, you can see the tire basically explode, taking a good portion of the rear bodywork with it. He manages to keep the car pointed straight, sawing at the wheel to stop from spinning out. Luckily, he had plenty of run-off room, staying straight rather than navigating the Bus Stop turn. It’s a tricky maneuver, and he nearly gets clipped by passing traffic, but eventually he makes it to a safe area to stop and wait for help.

This video shows how suddenly things can go wrong on track-and how you always need to be prepared for the unexpected. That’s racing for you.
