Mate X is BETTER than the Galaxy Fold and here's Huawei's reason why

Huawei Mate X debuted during the Chinese OEM’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) keynote that was attended by Express.co.uk.

The Mate X is the firm’s foldable phone and was revealed mere days after Samsung fully showcased the Galaxy Fold that is similarly flexible.

The Huawei Mate X comes with a single screen that folds over the device as opposed to the Samsung’s offering that folds on top of itself.

Unfolded, Mate X comes with an 8-inch display that boasts a unique 8:7.1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2480×2200.

Folded, the handset comes with a 6.6-inch display on its front that has the more familiar aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a resolution of 2480×1148.

However, on its rear the hardware has a 6.38-inch display that offers a 25:9 aspect ratio and a 2480×892 resolution.

Huawei is pitching the rear screen as one to be harnessed when the user wants to take a selfie.

That is because, when folded, the Mate X’s side panel that houses its triple-camera system is facing the user.

The Chinese OEM has declared the Mate X will take selfies with laudable quality because it does not need to rely on a dedicated front-facing sensor.

All the futuristic technology packed inside the Mate X means it is accompanied by an eye-watering price tag.

The foldable flagship costs €2,299 which is equivalent to £1,972.63 at the time of writing.

In contrast, the Galaxy Fold will cost $1,980 (£1,493.32)

However, the CEO of Huawei Technologies Consumer Business Group believes the Mate X’s added cost is worth paying over the Galaxy Fold.

Following the announcement of the Chinese OEM’s flexible product, Richard Yu held an interview session for media outlets that was attended by Express.co.uk.

During the event, the CEO stated the Mate X was “definitely” worth the added amount because it is a “much better product”.

He said: “I think it’s definitely worth that (the added cost), you know it’s a much better product.

“Huawei, why are we doing such an innovative product? Because we want to do the best.

“We want to be driving and leading the industry innovation.”

Yu also insisted the Galaxy Fold was “much thicker” than Huawei’s offering, adding to the latter’s appeal.

The CEO was also keen to explain Huawei had experimented with “many different types of foldable style” before settling on the type used with the Mate X.

Richard Yu said the tech giant “designed all the possibilities” of a foldable phone, even the method employed by the Galaxy Fold.

However, he was eager to note the firm decided against using such a design as it was “too thick”, “terrible” and “rubbish”.

Mr Yu continued: “You know to be honest there are many different types of foldable style that we all investigated.

“That’s the other solution we have like the Samsung, we already have that but that’s not good, we stopped that to launch that (Mate X).

“We also have other types of foldable phones, to be honest with you we designed all the possibilities, but that’s too thick, that (Galaxy Fold) looks like two phones together.

“So that’s terrible, that’s rubbish. We cannot, so we tried different designs so finally we select the best.”

Yu also noted the Mate X does not come with a notch on its display, whether it is folded or unfolded.

In contrast, the Galaxy Fold does have a notch on its main display and has very large bezels on its cover panel.

The CEO remarked: “We make the best. There’s no punch and no notch either, no cutout at all.

“It is so slim and so light and long battery life which is super.

“Because if we make the product big and bulky, nobody will want to use it, that’s too heavy in my pocket. That’s not good.”

Unlike the Galaxy Fold that has a firm release date of April 26 this year, Huawei has not provided exact timing for when the Mate X will launch.

Instead, the firm has merely insisted the flexible flagship will be made available by the middle of this year.
