India-Pakistan: TOTAL WAR fears return as ‘shelling resumes in Kashmir killing civilians’

The area has been dogged by conflict and rising tensions in recent days after Indian airstrikes targeted alleged Pakistani militant bases on Monday. Pakistan retaliated in kind by downing an Indian fighter jet and holding its pilot captive before releasing him on Friday in a “peace gesture”. Indian police confirmed three people died overnight after a shell fired by Pakistani soldiers hit their home in Poonch region.

The area resides close to the so-called Line of Control dividing the Himalayan territory of Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

The Indian army purports to have responded with soldiers.

Tensions in the region have been on a knife edge after an Indian aircraft crossed in Pakistani.

The aircraft was carrying out what India termed a “pre-emptive airstrike” against supposed militants in an alleged terrorist camp in retaliation for a February 14 suicide bombing on Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The Valentine’s Day attack resulted in the deaths of 40 Indian troops.

However, Pakistan has denied the existence of the camp India said it was targeting and said there were no casualties as a result of the strike.

Following the attack, Pakistan captured an Indian fighter jet pilot who has since been released close to the border.

Wing Commander Abhinandan was seized after his MiG-21 combat jet crashed after it was hit.

An unverified video appeared to show him being beaten by civilians before a Pakistani soldier intervened.

The Pakistani military later posted, then removed, a video showing Mr Abhinandan being questioned after the attack.

The Indian government condemned what it described as a “vulgar display of injured personnel”.

However a later video clip showed Mr Abhinandan drinking tea without a blindfold, whilst also complementing the Pakistani military on how they treated him.
