Samsung thinks the Galaxy Fold has a huge advantage over the Mate X and here's why

Galaxy Fold was shown off in full at Samsung’s recent Unpacked hardware event.

The device comes with a main display and a cover screen that is presented when it is folded.

The former is 7.3-inches in size and has a resolution of 1536×2152.

Meanwhile, the latter has a 4.6-inch display that has noticeably large bezels on its top and bottom.

Shortly after the Galaxy Fold was showcased, Huawei unleashed a foldable phone of its own called the Mate X.

The biggest difference between the two premium devices is how each folds.

Samsung’s offering folds on top of itself, meaning the hardware effectively doubles in size when it is closed.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s product folds over itself, meaning it retains the same thickness in both form factors.

However, it appears Samsung’s method could present several advantages over that taken by the Chinese tech giant.

Kate Beaumont, director of product, services, and commercial strategy at Samsung UK, recently spoke about the Galaxy Fold with The Verge.

Beaumont was eager to discuss Samsung’s reasoning for the Fold’s final design.

She said: “We considered a lot of options.

“There’s things like if you want to put a case on it, usability, durability, and we feel that having the screen on the inside is the best way to protect that screen.

“We have the technology to do a fold that is very very tiny, as of course if you have the fold on the outside it doesn’t take quite the same amount of research and development to get that device to fold as it does something that is folding with a much lower angle degree on it.”

Beaumont’s comments about the “durability” of the product suggest Samsung’s offering could allow for a greater number of folds than the Mate X.

However, such a claim cannot be confirmed until both the Galaxy Fold and Mate X have released and are tested in the wild.

In a press conference attended by Express.co.uk at Mobile World Congress (MWC), Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu, claimed the Mate X should be capable of withstanding 100,000 folds in its lifetime.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a confirmed release date of April 26.

Meanwhile, Huawei has not given a precise launch time for the Mate X, instead claiming the product will arrive in the middle of 2019.
