Gary Lineker makes subtle dig at Tottenham that leaves Arsenal legend Ian Wright laughing

Tottenham are now points off of table-topping Liverpool after they went down to a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

That’s their second loss in two games and came just days after a shock loss at Burnley.

There has been talk that Spurs were serious title challengers but Lineker clearly thinks anything but.

While presenting MOTD, Lineker said: “Tottenham’s titles aspirations are over for what – five or 10 years?”

The comment had Arsenal legend Wright laughing but Lineker ploughed on and turned to Wright’s co-pundit Alan Shearer for his reaction.

Pedro and an own-goal from Kieran Trippier gave Chelsea the win and Shearer was not impressed.

“Tottenham again, defensively, looked poor,” he said. “They were poor at the weekend against Burnley and poor again this evening.

“For the goal, there’s no way Toby Alderweireld should let him come back inside there and have a shot at goal. He’s got to see him out of play.

“If he whips it across, fine, and Lloris should do better. He shouldn’t be beaten at hsi near post.

“The second is just a calamity between Tripper and Lloris – there’s no communication.

“Lloris comes sprinting out for some reason and he doesn’t slow down whatsoever. You can see Trippier looking at him.

“It was just a nightmare for Tottenham and a much-needed win for Chelsea and their manager.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino conceded after the match that winning the title was now impossible.

Pochettino said: “Chelsea had one shot on target and one goal and we didn’t shoot – its difficult that way to win and we weren’t solid enough. In the small details the result was decided for Chelsea.

“The competition will put us in our place. It’s a 10-month competition, not just three or four months. We are disappointed now.

“After Burnley I said it was difficult, and tonight makes it impossible to fight Man City and Liverpool.

“Only they can win the league – we must fight to win games and to be fair.”
