F1 news: Ferrari decision slammed by former chief Luca di Montezemolo – It is ‘sacred’

Ferrari are hard at work fine-tuning ahead of the new F1 season, which starts on March 17 with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The Prancing Horse are pinning their hopes on Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc having ditched veteran driver Kimi Raikkonen.

The duo were present earlier this month when Ferrari unveiled the SF90 car they will drive over the course of the next eight months.

Ferrari’s new car turned heads due to the fact it is covered in matte finish paint, rather than the vibrant red of previous years.

Ferrari have explained the decision to go for the matte red was made due to the lightweight nature of the paint.

However, former Ferrari president Di Montezemolo is not a fan of this year’s livery and is not buying the explanation for it.

“In my opinion, the Ferrari red is sacred,” Di Montezemolo told Italian newspaper Tuttosport.

“It’s a brand that is known all over the world. That’s why I do not really like it.

“And I’m not convinced by the story that it saves so much weight.”

Ferrari have failed to win an F1 title since Raikkonen and Felipe Massa combined to secure the World Constructors’ Championship in 2008.

And they will be desperate to put that right this year having seen Red Bull and Mercedes thrive during their drought.

Di Montezemolo has admitted he will forget his reservations about the SF90 if Ferrari manage to secure silverware this time around.

“If this leads to the long-awaited success, I would push my grief over the colour aside,” Di Montezemolo added.

Ferrari have been one of the most impressive performers during pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Vettel, though, had a nightmare on Wednesday morning as he went careering off the Circuit de Catalunya track and crashed into the wall at turn three.

Ferrari confirmed a mechanical problem had caused the incident, which comes less than a month before the new F1 campaign begins.
