Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast star reveals 'in case of emergency' option on Kilimanjaro climb

The 41-year-old BBC Breakfast presenter said goodbye to his colleagues earlier this month as he prepared to take some time off to head on a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Comic Relief. Yesterday, as Dan Walker and his fellow celebrity hikers soldiered on through day five of the climb, he informed fans he had decided to break into the “in case of emergency” stash. In a video shared by BBC Breakfast with their 277,000 Twitter followers, he could be seen standing in the shadow of the peak with famous faces including sports pundit Osi Umenyiora, 37, Little Mix star Jade Thirwall, 26, and Countryfile host Anita Rani, 41. “Hello everybody,” Dan greeted fans.

“Day four in the climb to Kilimanjaro and I got given this when I left BBC Breakfast and it says, ‘open in case of emergency’.”

Holding up a package, the BBC favourite continued lightheartedly: “We are are an hour-and-a-half away from lunch, we’ve run out of snacks.”

“So hungry,” Jade chimed in.

“This is the moment, okay?” Dan continued, opening the parcel. “Please be good…

“Chocolate raisins!” he exclaimed, as the group cheered.

“Get some of those down you, Jade,” he said, starting to hand the sweet treats around.

When he offered the chocolate coated raisins to Osi, however, the former NFL player shook his head: “I hate raisins.”

The celebrities let out a resounding, “Oh no!”, while Dan fished around inside the package again.

“Oh hold on, do you need some blister protection?” he quipped, producing another gift from the BBC Breakfast team.

“Probably,” Osi laughed. “I’ll probably take those over the raisins.”

Dan also read out an encouraging card from his co-stars, which said: “Hi Dan and everyone, we’re looking out for you, from the entire BBC Breakfast team.”

“Thank you, and we will enjoy these emergency snacks… apart from Osi,” he chuckled.

The celebrities are aiming to climb 19,000’ in eight days as they tackle Kilimanjaro in order to raise money for Comic Relief.

Many of the famous faces on the trip have been struggling with altitude sickness, with Dan saying yesterday: “I had really bad altitude sickness but Jade, even though I can’t quite remember it, sang Africa by Toto to me, and she gave me a strawberry lace!

“She saved me!” he added.

Their journey will be documented in a one-hour BBC special, Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb, which will air on March 13 at 9pm on BBC One.
