Sony’s new flagship smartphone was announced yesterday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona with it including some new extras and a radical redesign.
The Xperia 1 arrives with huge 6.5-inch OLED 4K screen which offers a stunning 21:9 aspect ratio and improved colour accuracy.
This should make it one of the best devices for viewing movies on the move especially as there’s Dolby Atmos audio tucked inside as well.
Other new features on the Xperia 1 include the latest Qualcomm 855 processor and a triple rear camera which has been designed using the help of Sony’s award-winning Alpha brand.
This trio of snappers will offer improved low light photography along with the ability to shoot images with an ultra-wide and telephoto lens.
Along with all these new features and upgrades, there’s one final design change which will offer a major improvement over the current Xperia XZ3.
That’s because Sony has finally listened to its critics and moved the fingerprint scanner from the terrible position on the rear case.
The XZ3’s security sensor was placed right underneath the camera which, with a similar size and shape, often meant placing your finger right on the lens rather than the scanner.
The Xperia 1 now gets a side-mounted fingerprint reader which should offer a hugely improved user experience.
Sony is no stranger to featuring this technology on the sides of its phones and it’s good to see the Xperia 1 is getting this upgrade.

There’s no official release date for the Xperia 1 but we do know how much it will cost.
Sony has placed a price of £869 on its new flagship which is more expensive than previous phones.
We’ll have to wait and see if it’s worth that price but the signs are certainly promising for this new phone with that stunning screen and new camera offering something new for Xperia fans.
