Kim visited the North Korean embassy in Hanoi ahead of his meeting with President Trump, according to state media.
The North Korean leader travelled to Hanoi from Pyongyang by armoured train, in a journey that took 65 hours.
Kim tends to avoid air travel, though he was flown to the Singapore summit with Trump last June by the Chinese government.

Security is tight at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel in Hanoi, where Trump and Kim will meet later today.
The Vietnamese military have been conducting security patrols according to CNN.
Both Trump and Kim are in the city ahead of the meeting, with Kim reportedly being briefed by his team.
