R Kelly: R&B singer released on bail after pleading not guilty to sexual abuse charges

The R&B star paid the £76,000 ($100,000) at the Cook Country Sheriff’s Office after pleading not guilty to 10 charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Mr Kelly handed himself in to police on Friday and spent the weekend behind bars. The 52-year-old did not speak to the media as he was escorted from prison by his lawyer.

He is due to appear in court on March 22 to face the multiple charges set against him.

Cook County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sophia Ansari confirmed last night the singer had raised the ten percent of his $1million bond set by the judge.

The court also ordered the singer to surrender his passport and to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Mr Kelly has faced numerous allegations of sexual abuse since the 1990s, but has denied all previous accusations.

He is being tried for sexual assault allegations that were reported to have happened since 1998.

His plea comes weeks after the documentary series ‘Surviving R Kelly’ aired, in which several woman accused him of abuse.

In a news conference yesterday, high-profile attorney Gloria Allred confirmed that she is now representing six women who have made accusations against the R&B singer.

One attorney, Michael Avenatti, said he would give prosecutors a second video which incriminates Mr Kelly.

Following the allegations, there have been calls to boycott the singer’s music amid pleas for other victims to come forward.

The singer has continued to make music throughout the allegations despite the growing movement against him.

During Mr Kelly’s bail hearing, his lawyer Steve Greenberg stated that the singer had not made much money despite his success.

According to reports, Mr Kelly had initially struggled to post the $1million (£761,000) bail.

At the time of his arrest, Mr Greenberg said that his client was “extraordinarily disappointed and depressed” and allegedly maintains his innocence.
