Lakers backed to trade for Draymond Green AND another max contract star by NBA expert

That’s according to ESPN’s NBA expert Max Kellerman.

The Golden State Warriors forward is under contract in the Bay Area until 2020, when he can become an unrestricted free agent.

The three-time All-Star can pen a five-year deal worth $129million this coming offseason.

But Green can also qualify for a supermax contract worth closer to $220m across five years if he is named Defensive Player of the Year.

Yet the 28-year-old is close to changing his representation to take up the same agency as Lakers leader LeBron James in Klutch Sports’ Rich Paul.

And that has led to speculation that an eventual move to Los Angeles is being orchestrated.

The Warriors got star guard Steph Curry to pen a supermax deal in July 2017 while Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson – both free agents this summer – are eligible for maximum contracts, which could see Golden State’s payroll nearing its threshold even before Green is factored in.

The Lakers meanwhile want to recruit another elite-level talent to put alongside LeBron but failed in their attempts to snag another of Paul’s clients, Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans, before the trade deadline.

Yet Kellerman believes the Lakers could land Green in a trade and also lure another max contract player – with the 2019 class of free agents including several major stars who L.A. would love to team with LeBron – at the same time.

Speaking on ESPN’s First Take alongside Stephen A. Smith, Kellerman said: “Draymond Green’s overall game is excellent. He has fallen from third-most important Warrior behind Steph, and he used to be second – Steph, then Draymond, then Klay.

“Then KD joined the team and with Draymond taking a little half-step, quarter-step back and Klay continuing to do what he does, Draymond’s like the fourth-best player on the team now.

“All that said, if the Warriors look at their situation and go, ‘We need to reshuffle this deck. We could lose KD, who knows with Klay, we still have Steph and we need to build around that.’

“It may be a situation where they’re best off flipping Draymond into something else, young pieces or parts.

“How would Draymond play with LeBron James? Extremely well. Draymond gets every loose ball, is a monster defender, defends multiple positions.

“The other thing about it, when you acquire Draymond, if you get him in the middle of this deal you can usher him under the cap as a half-max player.

“You can afford to go out and get other players and then re-do his deal in such a way that it doesn’t handicap you getting a max contract guy.”
